Women's Ryder Cup by Ollie Goss

After watching a significant amount of the Ryder cup this past weekend, I thought it was the coolest golfing event that professional golf has. There's plenty of drama as you watch the world's best golfers team up together and play for their country's. Men's professional golf has the luxury of this event, but women's professional golf doesn't. I think that if the women's tour produced an event that replicates the Ryder Cup, their tour would grow exponentially in popularity. A female Ryder cup would also help the women become more well known for example, I didn't really know who Webb Simpson or Jason Dufner were before watching this weekend's event, but now they are some of my favorite golfers. I believe the same kind of effect would matriculate from a women's Ryder cup and believe they should create this kind of event. For an event like this to be popular, I think you would have to hold it the same year as the men's and the week directly after. The reasoning behind this because people would still be interested in golf after the men's the week before and want to watch one last golf tournament before the end of the season. If the event was created, would you want to watch a women's Ryder cup?

  1. Ollie,

I agree with you that the idea of a female Ryder Cup would boost the visibility of women's ratings in golf. I don't know if I would watch it, but just like any other cross-country competition, people like to see their country win. Even if people don't watch it, it's still something they will see on ESPN, or will find out by word of mouth. People don't follow women's soccer that much, but come FIFA or Olympic time, women's soccer is as much talked about than anything else. Obviously the Ryder Cup isn't as big as FIFA or the Olympics, but like fore-mentioned, people want to see their country succeed, or in this case just beat Europe. I like the idea and maybe in the future we will be seeing a women's Ryder Cup. Nice blog

  2. Actually there is a competition between European and U.S. women and it is called the Solheim Cup. Here is a link to the website: http://www.solheimcupeurope.com/

This competition began around 1990, but like many other women's sports, it has obviously not gotten the same kind of coverage that the Ryder Cup has.
