Intro-Stephanie Loomis

Hello, my name is Stephanie Loomis, a senior SM major with a recreation minor. I hail from a small town south east of Bowling Green called Fostoria, Ohio. Some of you might be familiar with the nicknames "Fo-ledo, or Fo-troit." It is a small city with two high school, one parochial and one public. I graduated from the public school with about 160 classmates.

Fostoria High is home of the Redmen, somewhat controversial mascot in this day in age, but I took pride in it for years. I participated in four years of varsity basketball and softball. I still stay active in both sports by playing intramural basketball and pick-up games. I continued my softball career here at BGSU with the club team.  I am currently the president of the club, for the third year. It causes some stress because of the planning and time it takes to make all the arrangements with opposing teams, umpires, etc. But it's worth it to be able to continue my favorite sport. In basketball I was typically a point guard, but often times the lineup would include girls my height or an inch taller. Which lead to me somehow adopting a post position, crazy right? My junior and senior year I either tied our leading rebounder or was a close second. I supposed it's because of my excellent box-out! In softball I am now considered a utility player, because I can cover every position with a high skill level. I have been playing fast pitch since the age of seven or eight, so the softball diamond is second nature. In my younger years I played the part of shortstop. This position quickly became my home and my comfort zone. I recently found out I have  a torn rotator cuff, in my throwing shoulder, which I'm sure you can conclude is somewhat problematic. Thank goodness for Cortisone injections which get me through the harsh pains and makes playing with a little reserve bearable. I was scheduled to have surgery to repair the damage at the beginning of August but decided to postpone it until school wouldn't have to take a backseat to my recovery. I am still going to attempt to play this school year, so hopefully the ol' shoulder holds up for my senior season.

The female athlete I would most want to see compete in her element would be Abby Wambach. She is a phenomenal soccer star. I have never been a HUGE soccer fan, I enjoy playing the sport and watching in small doses. But after her most recent Olympic performance, I have become a true soccer fan. (US Women's soccer specifically) She was so tenacious and inspiring throughout her play, it was undeniable that she is the total package.

The male athlete I would most like to see would be Brett Favre (as a Packer). He was my favorite athlete as a kid. I was totally into his demeanor and his successes. I wanted to find some way to attain all of his records and better them. Even as I got older I enjoyed watching Brett play as a Packer, even when he had a few roller coaster seasons.  That is until he learned how to use his camera phone, then his departure was a little more justified. But once a Packer, always a Packer in my heart. Glad I could grow up watching his talent on the field.

While taking sport and gender I hope most of all to gain a better understanding of gender roles, ways athletes identify themselves sexually, physically, emotionally, and socially. I believe all are vital to the success of each athlete and even people like us studying to manage the athletes and products presented by sport and the way it is influenced by gender.

Nate Riley- Introduction

My name is Nathan Riley, and I am a Sports Management Major, with a minor in Communication. Sports have been my life since I was at a very young age. I was involved athletically in high school, and like many other Sports Management majors I did not want stop being involved.

Over the course of the past few years, I have changed my outlook on Sport quite a bit. I came to Bowling Green State University in hopes of preparing to attend Law School, but as the year has gone I have been more and more focused on college athletics. One of my main ambitions in life is to be able to have a family and be a good dad, and I know being a Sports Agent will not allow me to do that. So, I am preparing my future for college athletics where I will be able to get my family involved.

My favorite professional athlete as of right now would have to be, Tim Tebow. I know even just saying the name can draw a lot of attention to oneself. Being a part of "Tebow Mania" is something that is constantly under speculation, but I feel fans are starting to idolize athletes for simply their athletic accomplishes and not what is important and that is their morals. Tim Tebow is a man that carries himself to a higher standard and I truly respect that about him.

My favorite female athlete would have to Misty May-Treanor. She is an athlete that is simply a legend among female athletes! She also carries herself to a higher standard, and it is incredible she has carried out her dominance for so long! Truly incredible to watch, and someone I feel young girls can look up to as well.

Turea Moore - Introduction

Hi, my name is Turea Moore and I am a Junior here at Bowling Green State University majoring in Sport Management with a minor in Marketing.  I was born and raised in Cleveland, OH.  Prior to Bowling Green, I went to a high school called Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy in Cuyahoga Falls, OH.  During my 6 years there (it was a combined Jr. High School & High School), I’ve participated in Track and Field and Basketball.  Track was more of a social event when I ran; I didn’t take it serious and only ran because I was fast.  Basketball on the other hand is my first true love.  I have been playing basketball since I was 7 years old, and I haven’t put a ball down since! I was blessed with being able to play on the Varsity level during my freshman year in high school, which was also the same year that I had stopped running track as well.

Basketball and Track are my favorite sports to watch on Television and Live, but Basketball is my favorite sport to play even now.  I love to watch Track meets because I think it is just amazing to see the maximum levels of speeds that human beings can push towards.  My favorite events to watch are any sprint races (100, 200, 400, Hurdles, and Relays).  Sanya Richards-Ross is a female athlete that I would pay to see because I love her dedication and heart she has for her sport.  I follow her on many social networks and even her blogs on YouTube, her work ethic is amazing, and she is phenomenal at what she does.  Basketball on the other hand, I would pay to see Michael Jordan play basketball in his prime! Even if it was just a 1-on-1 match!  Michael Jordan is considered the Greatest Player to ever play basketball, and when I heard about MJ, that’s when I just started getting interested in basketball.

So Far, I have no concerns or expectations for this course, but just from the first week, I do know that it will be a fun interesting one!

Introduction by Ollie Goss

Hello! My name is Ollie Goss and I am a Junior here at Bowling Green. I am a Sports Management major and have been determined to have a career in sports ever since I was little. I am from the small town of Rossford, OH, which is a direct suburb of Toledo. In fact, the new casino that was just built is only fifty yards from the city limits. In high school, I played about every sport that we had. I played basketball for four years, tennis for four years, and golfed for three, but my friends and I always played sports for fun. The highest level of competitive sports I achieved were Varsity in all three, but I did not continue on to play collegiately. In college I play intramural soccer and basketball and have a lot of fun doing so. I am not completely removed from high school sports as I am the Rossford girls varsity assistant tennis coach, as well as, a basketball coach for Rossford. This year is my first coaching girls tennis and I really have enjoyed it so far. I have been coaching basketball since I was in eighth grade, at every level up to varsity. Although I like coaching tennis, I love coaching basketball more because I have been doing it for so long and have experienced both triumph and defeat.

My favorite female athlete is the great American tennis player Serena Williams. I chose her because I love watching her play tennis in such an exciting and entertaining manner. She is so powerful in everything she does and basically dominates players off the court. My tennis game is very similar to Serena's because I have a decent, fast serve and a hard forehand. I also like watching Serena play because she positively motivates herself after critical points that she wins. She yells, "Come on!" often during her matches and gives herself a spark of energy that keeps her steamrolling opponents. My favorite accomplishment of Serena's is winning this years Olympics at Wimbledon in such a dominating fashion. She absolutely crushed Maria Sharapova and represented her country emphatically.

Although I told the class my favorite male athlete was Kobe Bryant, after deeper thought, my actual favorite male athlete is former Chelsea football club striker Didier Drogba. Didier is from the Ivory Coast and led Chelsea, a soccer team in the English Premier League, to a number of titles, including last year's Champions League title. I like Drogba so much because the first ever English Premier League game I watched was a Chelsea game and he had a very entertaining hat trick. He is entertaining to watch because wherever he's at on the pitch, he can score from. My favorite Drogba moment was during last year's Champions League final in which he made the game winning penalty kick to beat Bayern Munich in Germany and win their first Champions League. Although he doesn't play for Chelsea anymore, Drogba is still my favorite athlete.

My expectations in this class are to learn more about the portrayal of gender in sports and about how controversial issues were dealt with. So far, I have absolutely loved the class and enjoy that there was no book that we had to purchase. I feel that the articles that we have been reading are more entertaining then textbooks and are easier to read. I'm excited to learn more in this class for the rest of the semester.

Introduction- Jacob Beverly

My name is Jacob Beverly and I am a senior majoring in sport management with a minor in journalism. I am from Delta, Ohio, which is about 40 minutes west of Bowling Green. I came to BGSU because of the sport management program; it peaked my interest because I have a passion for sports and can't see myself doing anything else in any other field of study. I am minoring in journalism because I would someday like to become a sports writer and cover major sporting events, I would say watching sports and talking about them is a dream job for me. My favorite sports teams are THE Ohio State Buckeyes, Indianapolis Colts, New York Yankees, and Detroit Pistons.

The male athlete that I would pay to see play is Derek Jeter. I would pay to see him play because he has perfected his craft and became one of the greatest players to ever play the game of baseball, you can hate him all you want. It is amazing how he carries himself on the field with all the pressure and expectations that playing for the Yankees brings. He has an endless confidence in himself and a will to win that makes him so great.

The female athlete I would pay to see is Serena Williams. I want to see Serena play because she has also become one of the best players in her sport. She is so passionate about tennis and it shows with her play on the court. I want to see firsthand the passion and emotion that she brings to the sport, along with her ability to rise to the occasion. When the pressure is the highest, she plays her best tennis and that is what separates her from everyone else.

I am very interested in this class to see just how gender and sport really correlate. There are deeper aspects of sport and gender that I want to learn about, rather than just the difference of a man and woman playing a sport. I think this class will help me in my future as a sports writer and my ability to write about the true meanings behind sport, other than just the game that is being played. It will help me to write stories that will peak the readers interest on a deeper level.

Ryan Hetrick - Introduction

By Ryan Hetrick

My name is obviously Ryan Hetrick. I am a junior, Sport Management major from the exotic town of Bowling Green, Ohio. I chose to be a 'townie' because of BGSU's reputation in the Sport Management field. I will be (hopefully) heading out to Las Vegas this summer to complete an internship for the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). I am minoring in marketing and the internship I just mentioned will be following along that path, making contracts with the UFC's sponsors and shadowing a representative of the company to regular business meetings. Staying with the company would be a true dream of mine, so I'm pretty excited and looking forward to the opportunity.

In high school I participated/lettered in track & field until my senior year. Injuries cut my basketball and football seasons short in both seventh and eighth grade so I chose to retire at a young age. I continue to run and have set an ultimate goal of completing an Ironman Triathlon within the next 6 years. I have also competed in the Glass City Marathon twice and will be entering for a third time this coming April. On campus, I have joined intramural flag football teams both my freshman and sophomore year, and this fall will be starting a Disc Golf Club on campus.

If I could chose any female athlete to watch compete, I would choose Annika Sorenstam. After re-thinking it and hitting up the campus golf course, watching anyone be decent, much less great at golf would be spectacular to see. I know she is retired but I'd be willing to bet her score on 18 holes would beat my round of 9.

Below is a link to an article proving my last statement completely true.

A long time ago, my choice for male athlete to see compete would have been a very easy one, Michael Jordan. Deciding to go against the social norm for athletes, my selection would be from the UFC. Anderson "The Spider" Silva would be my choice athlete to see compete. After a 7 year, 15 fight unbeaten streak, I can't help but be in awe of watching him fight. To most, he his regarding as one of the top three fighters of all time. He's the person that introduced me into the MMA culture and seeing him perform would be a true honor.

This highlight video goes through almost all of his fights within the last 6 year for anyone wanting to check it out.

I am very excited for this Sport and Gender class. I think a lot of interesting topics will be discussed and hopefully some good debates. I have little very concern for this class and am ready for this semester.

Introduction By: Derek Brewer

Hello my name is Derek Brewer and I am a Junior majoring in Sport Management and minoring in Journalism. I am from Dayton, Ohio, the home of the Wright Brothers. The Sport Management program is one of the main reasons I came to Bowling Green State University. I'm a huge Cincinnati Reds fan, mainly because I grew up idolizing Barry Larkin, and it is good to see him get inducted into the hall of fame.

As I stated in class the female athlete I would pay to see is Alex Morgan, a forward for the U.S. Women's National Soccer team. She is such a dynamic player, and although she is known for her scoring ability I was very impressed with her versatility during the Olympics. It seemed as though she was setting up every goal she was not scoring. When watching her on Television it is easy to see that she is the most athletic person on the field, and to be able to see that "wow" factor in person would be absolutely incredible.

The male athlete that I would pay to see is Joey Votto, the first basemen, and MVP for the Cincinnati Reds. Growing up in Dayton I was able to see Joey Votto when he played for the Dayton Dragons, the Reds Class A minor league affiliate. When I would go to the games and watch him play I just knew that he was going to make it big at the Show. I want to see his progression first hand from the time he was a raw talent with the Dragons to the complete player he is now.

I feel like this class is going to be very interesting. Since there will be quite a few controversial topics it will make for some heated class discussions I'm sure. I'm hoping that it will become one of the classes that I am most looking forward to going to throughout the semester.

Brett Creamer - Introduction

I am currently a junior at Bowling Green State University. I was born in Petaluma, California. Petaluma Little League just placed third in the Little League World Series. This is pretty incredible, since no team in my area has ever made it out of San Bernardino. Ever since I can remember I have been an avid sports fan. I’ve played baseball since I was six years old, and played competitively including traveling baseball.  I have also played a year of football in High school and played AAU basketball while in High school. At college I consistently remain active by playing basketball and football in intramurals. BGSU caught my interest with its Sports Management program and seeing what it had to offer. Not only playing sports intrigued me, but also the statistical aspect in sports always interested me. My senior year in High school I took a visit out to BGSU and enjoyed the campus, and figured if I was going to get involved in Sports Management I might as well join one of the best schools in the country that offers it. Although it’s tough to travel from California to Ohio frequently, and live so far away from my family, I thoroughly enjoy my time at BGSU.

A female athlete that I would most like to see compete in her sport is Maya Moore, because she is a top woman’s basketball player that is quick and elusive while playing. She can also play great defense, dribble, and shoot the ball. Moore also dominated in college basketball, the WNBA, and even the Olympics, her skill is constantly improving and she is also a humble person. For a male athlete that I enjoy to see compete is Arizona Cardinal’s wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald has overcome a tough situation for a struggling franchise, and has excelled both on and off the field. Fitzgerald is known for his great work ethic, and for being an incredibly hard worker. Watching Fitzgerald on the field is always one of my favorite moments in watching football.

I am incredibly excited for taking Sport and Gender and truly feel that I can learn a lot from this course, and it can teach me things that I can take with me to my future working experiences. As long as I continue to work hard, and keep up on the class readings I know that I can handle the workload.

Introduction - RJ Hefflinger

By: RJ Hefflinger

Choosing just one favorite athlete is a tough question to answer. I have had many over the different  time periods of my life. Right now I would have to say my favorite
athlete is, due to the timing of this class is, Denard Robinson. He is the most explosive and dynamic college football player in the game. He has the ability to beat an opposing team through the air passing as well as on the ground, as long as he does not get hurt. I am a Michigan fan and have been for pretty much my whole life. Denard has surprised pretty much the entire wolverine nation as well as many football critiques from fist laying foot on the Michigan campus. He continues to get better and make better decisions and hopefully leads us to a perfect season and a national championship. Game 1 will certainly be a huge test for them, starting the season off with #2 Alabama over in Cowboys Stadium.

My favorite female athlete is Danica Patrick. Yes I know what you are thinking and no you are wrong, I don’t just say that because of her Go-Daddy commercials. I respect her and all that she has accomplished in a mainly male domain of a sport. She is respected among the other drivers of the league and she has been able to get her name just as popular Dale Earnhardt’s after all the years he had been at it.  Its really quite amazing how fast the word of a woman driver in Nascar is spread throughout sports fans. Even people that don’t care for Nascar know her name. The thing that gets me is she still has yet to win a race! She has all this press and popularity however not a single victory in Nascar. I hate to be a critic but with all that attention she gets it would be nice to get a win, not only for her and her team but Nascar as a whole.

I like pretty much every sport that involves competition. I try to get as many intermural teams together as I can, even if we are not competitive in them it is still good to interact and have a little fun during college. I like football the most out of all the sports, I always have since I started playing flag football in 4th grade. Basketball and hockey come next and then followed by baseball and soccer and the golf. My teams are: Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Michigan Football and Basketball, Detroit Tigers and Red Wings, BGSU Hockey (the most out of all the teams but I like all the teams here). I also wakeboard at Clear Lake, Indiana. I am just getting into the sport and it is not that easy transferring over from snow skis. I landed my first back roll and tantrum this year so I am still pretty pumped about that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oUIITsKuq4  - Wakeboarding Competition

I am taking this class for a couple of reasons. First off I have to for sports management, second I’d like to broaden my knowledge on both female and male athletics and their roles of economic and social impact on people. I am not too familiar with women’s sports so I hope to become a little more educated. Also I want to learn more about title 9 and what and who were the first athletes and sports to emerge after it came into effect.

Junho Song Introduction

Hello, My name is Junho Song. I am a junior at Bowling Green State University. I am from South Korea, and I was a marine in my country. Korean guys must go to military for 2 years, so I went to marine in my country. Most Korean people in the military areonly playing soccer when they have break time, so many people like soccer. I have been living in Bowling Green for 3 years now. When I came to America at the first time, I wanted to study English in Bowling Green Language Institute for a year. However, I wanted to go to BGSU, so I am still staying here now. My major is Sport Management, and minor is General Business. I like all sports; however, my favorite sport is soccer because I am familiar with playing soccer since I was in military. I had played soccer a lot with many people when I was in my country.

My favorite female athlete is Maria Sharapova. She is a Russian professional tennis player. Her play is great. In addition, Sharapova is a popular tennis player in the world, so I like to watch her game.

This video shows Maria Sharapova winning the French Open by beating Sara Errani http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zhZ_vCx-mY

My favorite male athlete is Ji-Sung Park who is a South Korean professional soccer player. He plays as a midfielder for the English club Queens Park Rangers. Previously, he played at Manchester United Club. My another favorite male athlete is Shin-Soo Choowho is a South Korean professional baseball outfielder at the Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball in the United States.

This is Ji-Sung Park’s information.

This is Shin-Soo Choo’s play http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WssyAa5KUEQ

In conclusion, I do not have any concerns about this class now. I hope I can have a great friendship with all classmates and have a great time in this class.
